A milestone birthday in Mermaid Beach, in a room done properly — a balloon wall running floor to ceiling, marquee letters, and fairy lights doing most of the work once the sun went down. No formal schedule beyond the cake, which is usually a good sign. The brief was to stay out of the way and let the night run, so most of this gallery is people who had no idea I was there.

Karaoke, Games and the Cake

The parts of a party worth photographing are rarely the ones on the run sheet. Here it was beer pong early, karaoke to a lounge full of friends in the middle, and the cake at the end — candles, then the cut, then everyone talking over the top of each other. Rooms like this are dark by the time the good stuff happens, so I shoot fast and light rather than setting up flash and turning the party into a photo shoot. Guests keep moving, and the pictures look like the night actually felt.
