How to Choose an Event Photographer on the Gold Coast

Booking a photographer for a conference, awards night, product launch or networking event is a different decision to booking one for a wedding — the brief is shorter notice, the room is often full of strangers rather than a guest list you know, and the photos usually need to work hard for marketing, not just memories. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing.

How fast do you get your photos back?

Most event photographers deliver in two to four weeks. For a corporate event, that's often too slow — a conference recap or LinkedIn post loses momentum fast once the week is over. Ask directly: what's the turnaround, and is it written into the booking? I deliver full galleries within two business days for exactly this reason.

Do they understand how to work a room, not just a stage?

A good event photographer isn't only capturing the keynote speaker — they're catching the side conversations, the handshake after a pitch, the candid reaction in the crowd. Ask to see a full gallery from a past event, not just the highlight shots, so you can judge whether they cover the whole room or just the obvious moments.

What happens if their gear fails mid-event?

There's no second take at a keynote. Ask whether they shoot with backup equipment — two camera bodies and multiple flashes, not one of each — so a single equipment failure doesn't mean missing coverage of your event.

How is pricing structured?

Hourly photography is common for events since coverage length varies — a two-hour networking evening is a different job to a full-day conference. Check whether local travel is included, what the hourly rate covers, and whether you get full usage rights to the images for your own marketing.

Have they actually shot events like yours before?

Conferences, award nights, product launches and networking evenings all have a different rhythm. Ask for examples from a similar event type and venue size — a photographer experienced with intimate networking evenings won't necessarily have the reflexes for a 300-person awards night, and vice versa.
