Dee's fortieth was the kind of party that photographs itself — a long lunch at a waterfront restaurant on the Gold Coast, three generations of family in one room, and enough afternoon light coming off the water to make everyone look good without trying. The brief was simple: capture the people, not the poses.

Details, Portraits and the In-Between

We started with the details before guests arrived — the tiered cake with its cascade of magenta petals, the floral arch, the tables set against the exposed brick. Once the room filled, the work shifted to family groupings at the arch and then to the candids that people actually keep: cousins hugging in front of the cake, a dad on the floor with a toddler, grandparents holding a baby. Detail coverage takes about twenty minutes and needs to happen before the first guest walks in, which is worth building into the run sheet.
