Planning a pre-formal shoot at the Botanic Gardens
The Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens in Benowa is one of the better pre-formal locations on the coast, and one of the easiest to organise. It's free, it's central, and it doesn't require booking. If you're planning a session there, here's what's worth knowing before the day.
Parking
Park just inside the park entrance. There's enough room for a group arriving in several cars, and it puts you within walking distance of most of the good spots.
Where the photos happen
The bridge over the lake is the standout — open water behind, clean background, room for a large group without anyone getting hidden at the back. The canopy path is the other one worth walking to, with filtered light through the trees and a very different feel from the lake shots. Between the two you get variety without moving cars.
What to wear on your feet
Bring joggers as well as heels. The distances between locations are short but they're not paved the whole way, and every group that turns up in heels only ends up moving slower than they wanted to. Change into the heels when the camera comes out.
Timing
The gardens are open 5am to 7pm, so there's no rush and no gate closing on you mid-session. Late afternoon gives the best light — I'll usually work back from the time your cars are booked and tell you exactly when to arrive.
How busy it gets
Quieter than you'd expect on formal weekends. Unlike some of the waterfront spots, you're not queuing behind three other groups for the same background. It's a public park, so there'll be walkers and families around, but they're not in your photos.
